Posted on Mon, 15 Sep 2014
Question: Dear Doctor,
I am a Hypothyroid since last one year, and consume one 25 mcg ELTROXIN pill everyday on an empty stomach.
I wish to know the short and long term side effects of this piil, if any.
Also, will I be able to maintain this dosage in the future, or the dosage has to be increased over a period of time ?
Moreover, is there any diet which can help me to reduce / stop the dosage intake ?
Kindly clarify.

Thanks and regards,

Brief Answer:
Avoid cabbage

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for your query.

Sorry for the delay in my response.

I am medical doctor, an associate in Department of Endocrinology, working with an experienced Thyroid disease specialist. I answer on his behalf.

Side effects of thyroxine are very less the commonest amongst during the initiation of the medication are hair loss, weight loss, loose stools headache, nausea etc. In cases with higher dose say around 75mc n above increased sweating, sensitivity to heat, mental/mood changes (such as nervousness, mood swings), tiredness, diarrhea, shaking (tremor), headache, shortness of breath can be experienced.

The chances of you getting off the dosage are there. Good diet and exercise would surely bring you off the medication. The duration required for the same is subjective.

Low fat and low carbohydrate diet with rich amount of fiber, iodine etc is good and avoidance of cabbage is very essential.

Hope, I answered your query.

Wish you good health.

Regards,

Dear Doctor,

Thanks for your reply !

However, I am also experiencing loss of libido ever since I have started using the pills. Is this one of the side-effects of pill or this is purely due to Hypothyroidism.

Also, I want to increase my weight as I currently weigh ~ 61 kgs. (Height of ~167 cms.). Is there any way to increase my weight ?

Thanks and regards,

Brief Answer:
Due to Hypothyroidsm

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

The loss of libido you have could be due to hypothyroidism but not due to thryoxine. This will surely get corrected once your thyroid hormone levels are withing range for more than 6 months.

Consuming protein rich food along with regular work our is the best way to gain healthy weight.
