What Are The Side Effects Of Diflucan?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: I have a male yeast infection on my penis and it has gone to the tip of my urethra as well and stings at times with residual urine dripping out, etc. I saw two Urgent Care doctors who put me on Clithmozole cream and then the second gave me one Diflucan. Two days after the 1 Diflucan, it just kept getting worse, so I went to see my general practitioner who now has me a 10 days of 150mg Diflucan, once daily. I am now on day three with no marked improvement. Any advice?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for posting on HCM.
I have reviewed your case history.
I can understand your concern regarding the skin lesions over genitals but its difficult to point specific diagnosis in absence of clinical examination.
Therefore, I insist you to post good clinical pictures to me so that I can help you in a better way.

Unfortunately I do not have access to a camera or a cord to connect one to my laptop at this time.

However, I have had yeast infections previously and my wife just got over hers, so we are pretty sure how it was transmitted. And my general practitioner did physical exam and confirmed that it was a yeast infection. As of Wednesday of this week my urine sample was clear with no infection in my urine.

My concern is that the space between taking the one Diflucan, which seemed to help initially, was three days until it was getting really miserable, especially the stinging at the tip. So now that I am day three of Diflucan 150mg each day for 10 days, I am wondering when I should see some improvement? Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Continue oral fluconazole

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,
Diflucan contains an antifungal drug fluconazole which works very well for yeast infections. In patients not responding to oral fluconazole we consider using oral itraconazole which is a better molecule than fluconazole, but since its just day three of fluconazole, I would suggest you wait till completion of 10 days course.
Topical clotrimazole on other hand is a very old antifungal molecule and lots of resistance is now-a-days seen against it. Thus I would advise you to switch to better topical antifungal like Sertaconazole cream and apply it twice a day.
Maintain hygiene and avoid intercourse till complete resolution of infection occurs to prevent cross-transmission.
Hope you got my point here.
Thanks
