What Are The Side Effects Of Ciprofloxacin?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: I am on ciproflaxian 500mg antibitoic for a UTI since tuesday last week. I am currently still having mild right side flank pain. However for the next 2 days after taking the meds i developed diarrhea and itchy rectum. As i showered i would rub my rectum area with a towel to soothe but since friday when i would use the bathroom, my stool would burn/hurt upon exit and i noticed some bright red blood on the tissue. What could this be? Side effect from the meds? Rectal cancer? Hemrroids? I am 27 years old, healthy. My stool is normal color. What can soothe this?

Brief Answer:
Likely to be due to anal fissure

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcaremagic
Greetings of the day
Dear Ms

First and foremost let me reassure you that at your young age it's unlikely to be something serious like cancer.

Going by description of symptoms of burning pain while passing stools and associated with bleeding , possibility of anal fissure strongly needs to be considered. Anal fissure is a small ulcer present at anal opening which is usually precipitated by passing hard stools or sometimes with diarrhoea. Exact diagnosis will depend on clinical examination. Providing clinical photograph will be helpful.

I would suggest you the following

1. Hot Seitz bath : To a tub of lukewarm water add 2 spoons of antiseptic solution. Sit in it for 15 to 20 minutes each session twice a day.
The warmthnes will relieve the pain and relax the muscle

2. Continue taking antibiotics;, stop it if the diarrhoea worsens .

3. Addition of Probiotic will be helpful

4. Local application of local anaesthetic like Xylocaine ointment before and after passing stools will help relieve pain

Do get back to me with following additional information

1. Is there any redness in area surrounding anus ?

2. Are there any skin eruption in that area

3. Providing clinical photograph will be helpful

Awaiting your response

Take care

Thank you for the feedback. I have attached a picture however it isnt that grest of quality. I panicked when i read rectal cancer; ive heard of people dying as young as 31.

Answers:

1. I cant tell if any redness but there is at the top where my cheeks fold in. Also, if i wipe with a towel it is very sore on the outside and also to spread my cheeks it hurts. Almost as if i am ripping my skin. When i hold the towel up to my anus and push as i am doing a bowel movement i had a small dot of bright red blood.

2. Cant tell if there is any, please see a picture

Where can i get the medication you are suggesting? Could the fungal infection come from the antibiotics? I usuallg get a yeast infection in the vaginal area while on antibiotics and i take diflucan. How long would it take for the fissure to heal?
doctor
Answered by Dr. Deepak Kishore Kaltari (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
fissure should heal in 1 to 3 weeks

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms

Fungal infection is not due to antibiotics used. It is due to moisture due to sweating and wetness due to repeated diarrhoea. Also wearing panty made from synthetic material is predisposing factor

You can get ointment (XXylocaine ) as over the counter medication. Also local application of antifungal ointment like Clotrimazole will help in treatment of fungal infection. You can also take Diflucan. The fissure should heal within 1 to 3 weeks .

Will Diflucan heal the fungal infecfion?

Thank you for your help
doctor
Answered by Dr. Deepak Kishore Kaltari (19 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Diflucan will help

Detailed Answer:
Dear Ms

Diflucan will help in healing but it may come back. As its a surface skin infection, long term use (2-3 weeks) of antifungal ointment is recommended.

Do keep me updated about progress.

Wishing you great health

Deepak
