What Are The Risks In Taking Magnesium When Diagnosed With Diabetes?

default
Posted on Wed, 1 Jul 2015
Question: Are there any risks with taking Magnesium? I am a 61 year old male with Diabetes and extreme cramps.... mostly in my legs but sometimes in my hands and feet. The cramps come mostly at night. I thought it was due to statins. But then I went off statins for two weeks.
At times, it seems like I have irregular heart beat as well. Two years past, I had a 4 way bipass due to narrowed arteries.
With constant cramps, I have difficulty sleeping. How much Magnesium Citrate should I take? I wish to avoid the runs. SWJones

Detailed answer...
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Magnesium deficiency can be the cause for your muscle camps but there are other reasons also which can cause similar cramps and hence it is essential to first determine the cause and then proceed ahead to remove it.
Reasons for cramps can be due to...
Lack of calcium and magnesium
Lack of sodium and potassium
Lack of VIT D
Lack of VIT B1,B6 etc
Conditions like hypothyroidism and hypoparathyroidism.
Use of medicines like diuretics, statins etc
In my opinion you should get tested for above and then take the required treatment  according to the report.
At your age taking 400 mg of magnesium per day is enough.
I hope it helps, however you are most welcome to revert to me for any further query.
Best of luck
Thanks
