Question: My father has been advised to undergo cataract surgery in XXXXXXX They are leaving us the choice of IOL if we want to go for Mono-focal or Multi-focal. He is 62, not having too much astigmatism, currently using spectacles (doesn't mind using post surgery also), can you suggest the whether any disadvantages is there for mono-focal? Also suggest brands for the IOL as well.

Brief Answer:
ALCON IOLs are vastly used with superior results.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Absolutely there is no disadvantage using monofocal lens. To answer your question the best multifocal would cost 40000/-. the best monofocal would cost 15000/-. So the difference would be 25k. The multi focals are available from 40k.

So if your father does not forget glasses, do not mind carrying a pair all the time let him go with monofocal IOL.

As an ophthalmologist, If someone asks me to put a multifocal lens I would be delighted because of its usefulness and post-operation expectation from patients. There is no need to correct near vision with glasses with a multifocal lens. Whereas monofocal lens often requires glasses to correct near vision (reading glasses). So basically multifocal also takes care of age-related presbyopia as well.

You can choose brands like ALCON or CARE GROUP IOLs.

Hope this answers your query.
