What Are The Chances Of A Spermatocele Becoming Cancerous?

default
Posted on Fri, 24 Jun 2016
Question: I am 72 and have very large spermatocele I have had 2 ultrasounds in the past 5 years. Both have come back negative. I recently asked the nurse practioner about getting another. She talked it over with my urologist and he said no. My concern is that both of my parents died of reproductive organ cancer. My mother of cervical cancer when she was 35 and my father of prostate cancer when he was 84. From what I have ther is a very small chance of a spermatocele becoming cancerous. My question is that with my family history of reproductive organ cancer shouldn't I get an ultra sound very often?

Brief Answer:
Certainly yes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific.
To recapitulate: Male/72 - visited Doctor - very large spermatocele - 2 ultrasound in last 5 years - normal - both parents died of cancer of reproductive organs - from what you have there is very small chance of spermatocele becoming cancerous - Question is about : with family history should not you get ultrasound very often...

Since the ultrasound had been normal how can you say that you have spermatocele?

Certainly your question has a point. Since both your parents had cancers, it is certainly necessary for you to get regular investigations particularly about the genito-urinary system.

I would suggest regular tests of :
- Blood PSA for prostate cancer
- Ultrasound of the whole abdomen and scrotum as per the schedule that is followed at your place, that your Urologist can tell you the best about as you will have to follow the advise of your Urologist.
- Per-rectal digital examination
- Further tests as per the reports of these tests and clinical evaluation by your Doctor/ Urologist..

I certainly agree with you but it all depends upon the decision of your Urologist, hence discuss these points with your Family Physician, get appropriate reference for an Urologist or a General Surgeon.

I hope this answer your specific query, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries.

Brief Answer:
Please get it operated.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
I do believe you, Sir.
Is it a spermatocele or hydrocele?
If this is so big I would advise for the surgery to get it corrected as it will continue to grow.
I hope this answer helps you.

What is the size of the spermatocele?
