What Are Signs And Symptoms Of Piriformis Syndrome?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 May 2017
Question: From the internet information, I have decided that I have piriformis Syndrome. I fit all the pain and location of the pain. Is there any medicine that I can take or is certain exercises stretching the piriformis the best answer. I have had this pain for a year and it makes driving a vehicle or sitting for long periods of time quite uncomforthable. I am a very active 77 year old male and pretty healthy overall. Another cronic problem I have is leg cramps. At night after an active day of sports , and sometime if I just get my leg in a cramped condition , the hamstring will knot up.

Brief Answer:
Rule out a slipped disc

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting the question.
I have gone through your medical history in detail.

From the symptoms it does seem to be a pyriformis syndrome but sometimes,it can be mistaken for an early slipped disc.
This needs to be ruled out by an MRI.

Considering that you have pyriformis syndrome, analgesic muscle relaxant tablets like aceclofenac/ibuprofen/thiocolchicoside will help.

Exercises can aggravate the problems so it is better to be avoided.

If the symptoms do not improve with the above measures, then you should consult an orthopedist. You may need local steroid injection shot if the pain aggravates.

I hope the answer was useful.

Feel free to ask me any follow up queries that you may have.

Thank you.
Kind regards.

unrelated TO my pyriformis problem, what is causing me so many leg muscle cramps? At night many times I wake up with horrible pain from a knotted up muscle, mostly hamstring but also calf muscles.

Brief Answer:
VITAMIN D / L- CARNITINE DEFICIENCY

Detailed Answer:
This can happen due to L carnitine or vitamin D / calcium deficiency.
You can get their blood levels checked.

If the levels are found low you can start on carnitine and vitamin D/Calcium supplements.
Thanks
