Brief Answer:
Osteoporosis may be a cause of recurrence

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for posting

After going through your query and searching through textbooks and online journals following are the predisposing factor for recurrence of RSD (reflex sympathetic dystrophy)-
1. Osteoporosis that is severe weakness of bone/brittle bone. This can be assessed by DEXA scan and if found it may be treated by - calcitonin nasal spray
- Once a year injection of zoldronic acid, once a month tablet of alendronate, once a week tablet of osteophos.
- Injection Teriparatide.
You may discuss with your treating doctor and decide what is best for you.
Beside above drugs take balanced diet rich in calcium (1000mg/day) and vitamin D (1000 i.u. /day) along with vitaminB12, B6.
Therefore prior to surgery subcutaneous dose of calcitonin may prevent recurrence.

2. Recurrences occur especially in younger patients and in the symmetrical limb.

3. Surgery on upper limb has more chance of recurrence as compare to lower limbs.

As far as recurrence rate is concerned it is 1.8% per year.
Hope this information suffices and I shall be glad to answer any further query.
Take care and wish you good health
