Question: Welcome to 'Ask a Doctor'. Please type your question here...My lungs hurt on and off. I don't have a cough. I think I had Covid-19 back in December, although at the time I thought my symptoms were the side effects of quitting smoking. I felt slightly ill and that's why I chose to quit. Anyway my lungs hurt on and off especially after being exposed to cigarette smoke or any kind of smoke - but the pain is on and off for a week or a little longer.

Brief Answer:
It is unlikely COVID.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for the query.
The symptoms you have mentioned not consistent with COVID. The typical symptoms of COVID are fever, cough, body ache and loose stools.
In your case most probably anxiety or smoking related issues are the possibilities.
Avoid unwanted stress and anxiety. If you are worried you can do a COVID test just for reassurance.
Thanks

I wasn't worried it's Covid, like I said, I am pretty sure I already had that. I am more worried about lasting side effects of either Covid or smoking. Every time I google the symptoms I see things about cancer or terrible things. What kinds of smoking-related issues should I worry about? Will it go away on its own?

I also have fluid retention pain under my ribs sometimes and have had that for a year on and off. It seems to get better with exercise and diet, but sometimes still is there. I worry that the two feelings are related.

Brief Answer:
It will settle by itself.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I think unnecessary anxiety may be the cause for most of your symptoms.
Cancer and all are very very unlikely.
If a person quits smoking his body tries to adjust the some minor symptoms like chest tightness may experience. It will settle by itself without any treatment.
Coming to fluid retention and pain, I didn’t understand what is meant by fluid retention. Is there any visible swelling or tenderness? Most probably it is due to minor inflammation.
Thanks

Hello,

Thank you for your reply. There is not really visible swelling, only tenderness and bloating in my abdominal area. The pain is upon waking just below the ribcage on both sides. It feels like excess water but is painful. The pain usually goes away throughout the day. Sometimes my right kidney hurts too so I worry, and I read somewhere that these symptoms can be related with lung issues too so I worried even more, hence the anxiety. The lung issue does seem to get worse in humidity. I was worried because I quit smoking six months ago, but I guess it does take some time for the body to heal.
