medullary sponge disease is benign
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic
The medulla is a part of the kidneys that is found in everyone with normal kidney structure.
Medullary sponge refers to changes that are usually present since birth or congenital. It only refers to the certain sacs or cysts and it is not usually associated with any problems
Most cysts in the kidneys are simple meaning that they do not cause problems or they are not cancerous. More dangerous cysts are called complex cysts.
Medullary nephrocalcinosis means that there is increased levels of calcium in the kidneys, it is often due to a generally increased levels of calcium in the person. It may not be associated with problems in some persons but the cause of the high calcium needs to be determined.
There are different causes of increased calcium, if increased levels are actually found on blood tests.
Medullary sponge disease is one cause of medullary nephrocalcinosis so it possible that for you this is the reason for the calcium build up and your blood calcium is not significantly high
Your doctor may suggest checking calcium (if not already done) along with magnesium, phosphorus, kidney function and the hormones that play a role in calcium levels
Summary: the structural change -medullary sponge is generally benign but can contribute to calcium build up and lead to medullary nephrocalcinosis
In many no symptoms but bloods may need to be done
I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
