Till When Is Progesterone Supplements Advised?

Question: Hi Dr XXXXXXX

I have been asking you questions related to my wife's pregnancy. She had 3 miscarriages previously and current pregnancy is in 9th week now. She is having ultrasound scans done every week and today's scan also went well. Doctor said there is nothing to worry. She has been taking progesterone supplements ( 2 tablets every day 100 mg each ). Doctor said she can stop the progesterone supplement after 9 weeks. I wanted to get your opinion on whether she should stop the supplements after 9 weeks or continue taking the supplements upto 12 weeks.

Happy to hear that your wife is having a healthy pregnancy and wishing u to get a healthy baby this time..

Opinions and treatment vary from doctor to doctor.. In my opinion, I would suggest to continue the progesterone tablet till 12 weeks.. I also use to start a small dose of aspirin for patients with recurrent abortion to enhance the blood supply to the fetus.. I used to continue aspirin tablet till 36 weeks..

She should take good rest and nutritious diet at this time.. Avoid intercourse and travel..
