Question: TO BE POSTED TO A DIETICIAN / NUTRITIONIST

I am an XXXXXXX residing in the middle east.

I am writing to request a diet chart based on my health condition detailed above. Appreciate if you can advise one. I am a non vegetarian and take more of seafood, chicken and mutton/beef (very seldom). I do take vegetables and salads too. I love fruits, however, there are certain fruits I am not supposed to eat. Could you please advise me the fruits I can take and what sort of quantity a time? I also like dry fruits like dates, figs, prunes, almonds, pistachios, walnuts. Can I take all these?
Look forward to receive your advice.

Brief Answer:
About fruits recommended in Diabetes:

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back,
Your BMI is 24.5 so you are not overweight but you need a low carbohydrate diet.
According to your BMI and physical activity i would recommend 1800-2000 calories/day.
I would recommend 2 fruits/day such as: An Apple, an orange, half of one banana, one pear, cherries (12-15), strawberries 5-6, one slice of melon or watermelon, one kiwi.
You may also alter the snacks with dry fruits that are very recommended in Diabetic patients, especially nuts and almonds 3-4 per day.
Your HbA1c is slightly elevated for your age, if it persists high after the diet, than the treatment should be modified.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta

Thank you doctor for your advice on the recommended fruits for diabetes. I am currently undergoing medication for GERD also and wonder if I can take oranges or/and all other proposed fruits too.

Meanwhile, I would also request for a dietchart based on my health profile which shall include breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner.

Appreciate your understanding and advice.

Brief Answer:
Diet modified:

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I suggest a Mediterrenean diet as i didn't know you are from XXXXXXX
The diet you described is very rich in carbohydrates. They should be reduced.
Eating every 1 hour and a half is very often.
I would suggest to add 1 Dosas/ Idli/ Roti to the boiled egg and green tea at 7.30 a.m and eat only one fruit at 10.30 a.m ( apple, 1/2 banana, papaya) than the next meal will be at 1.00 p.m (grilled vegetables with grilled fish, not fried, or chicken and a small portion of white rice).
At 4.30 p.m will be a snack (1 fruit/3-4 carrots/nuts or almonds + grean tea).
At 7.30 will be the next and last meal (vegetable curry/ salad + samosas/ pakodas).
Three meals and 2 snacks will be enogh.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta

Thanks Doctor for your advice. Infact I take full meal in a gap of 4-5 hours. I only drink water or green tea in between.

I wish to enquire if I can take :

1. Prunes
2. Dates
3. Honey

Moreover, since I am having a GERD issue, I am advised to take chilled low fat milk in the morning and night to avoid acid formation. Can I take the chilled milk as bought from the market or should I heat it and then make it chilled.

Appreciate your advice.

Brief Answer:
About dry fruits;

Detailed Answer:
Hi again;
Prunes and Dates are very rich in carbohydrates.
I would recommend only 1 prune or date as a snack.
Regarding to honey, it contains maltose (sugar) so it should be avoided.
There is no need to heat the milk you buy in supermarket. You can use it, but try to find the lowest fat milk you can find in your country.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta
