Suggest Ways To Wean Off Of Omeprazole

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Feb 2017
Question: I have been taking omeprazole (20mg/day) after having gastritis from h.pylori infection. This was successfully treated with antibiotics. I would like to wean myself off the omeprazole because I have read that it might cause kidney disease or kidney failure. I assume that is time and dose dependent. I'm 75 yrs. old. I don't want to have the terrible stomach aches but I REALLY don't want kidney failure either. This is a complex question bc the pathology report indicated lots of intestinal metaplasia in my stomach. (I understand what that is - If this were in my esophagus it would have regular follow-up).

Will "curing" the H. pylori infection or taking the ppi keep the intestinal metaplasia from progressing? I have had NO pain for two years. At 75, should I stop worrying about this (i.e. stomach cancer, kidney failure) and just enjoy life?

Brief Answer:
Enjoy life!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic,

As intestinal metaplasia of the stomach is a risk factor in developing intestinal-type gastric cancer, previous infection with H.pylori.

Intestinal metaplasia of the stomach is associated with a very small increased risk of developing gastric cancer. One of the risk factors is previous infection with H.Pylori. Metaplasia means change of one type of cell to other. It is a risk factor for carcinoma in near future.

However, your age is 75 and i don't think that you should worry too much about intestinal metaplasia as chances of it to develop into carcinoma are very rare.

On top of that your H.pylori is also cured now. Keep on taking Omeprazole, don't worry its a very safe drug and is used in patients for years without causing any significant side effect (Don't google too much). Rare things are always rare and they occur rarely.

Enjoy your life.
Some general instruction are --
Avoid over spicy food.
Avoid over salty food and carbonated water
Avoid alcohol and smoking

Don't worry enjoy life!
Thanks
