Posted on Fri, 15 Jul 2016
Question: Good afternoon I just recently had brain tumor surgery they prescribed me Roxycodone, oxycodone, for pain 5mg. I've been taking it every four hours since my surgery on May 9 and then I decided to wean myself down on everything and I'm completely off any medicine they gave me including nerve blocking medicine however I am down to 1 5mg of the oxycodone at night since XXXXXXX 13th. From XXXXXXX 16-21st, I was ill as in flulike symptoms diarrhea couldn't eat etc. so I'm not sure what I was detoxing from because they did give me tramadol as well and I completely just stopped that so I need to know How to get I need off the 5 mg one time a night how do I do that without withdrawal symptoms when I asked my pain management doctor he said I shouldn't have any trouble just stop but everything I'm reading doesn't seem to say that. I have trouble sleeping I always have so I take over-the-counter sleeping pills sometimes they work sometimes they don't but since I've been on the oxycodone I sometimes take half a Xanax to relax me help me go to sleep I'm scared to take over the counter sleeping pills with the oxycodone I'm only been taking the Xanax 2.5 mg since the beginning of XXXXXXX Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to health care magic!

I have read your query carefully and that you are having problem getting off from oxycodone. You are right to think that you are having withdrawal ...because you are having opioid withdrawal.
All symptoms -like of running nose, pain legs or cramps in calf muscles, loose motions, irritability or weakness or sleeping problem due to anxiety like state are due to withdrawal of oxycodone and the other medicine you were given.

You have been on a low dosage and that too for post operative pain management but it looks like you are sensitive to them.

There is nothing to worry about. It will get ok within a week or 10 days of stopping everything.

When I have a opioid withdrawal case of similar dosage then
1.I would also reccomend him to stop all of it in a go and just take sleeping pills for some days.
2. Taking adequate liquids or some good electrolyte powder will be helpful.
3. For pain I suggest simple pain killers two to three times a day which can be reduced gradually and stopped over a week time.
4. Taking sleeping pill like xanax with this is ok for sometime. No harm done.

You should not worry about withdrawal symptoms as they are part and parcel of normal opioid withdrawal and stop on their own.

I hope I have replied to your queries.

please ask follow up questions for further clarifications.I would try to help you .

Wish you good health.
