Brief Answer:
Motivational interviewing have the best results

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for using healthcaremagic.

I read your query and understand your concerns about failure to quit smoking by your brother.

As I can see he is interested in quitting smoking I feel motivational interviewing (MI) is the best strategy which can work for him. In this psychotherapy the person is motivated and the difference between desired behavior and current behavior is brought to the person in question. Here rather than directing the patient, therapist rolls with resistance and drives the patient to abstinence.

I will request you to see a psychiatrist in your city along with your brother. I hope he will consider your brother for MI.

I must acknowledge that medications have little role but they can be a great supplement when used with MI. One such example is bupropion.

I hope this helps you.

Also wanted to know 5-6 cigarettes per day - how dangerous is that? because i know cigarettes are injurious but i have heard some one saying 5-6 per day wont make that huge damage.. i know this question doesn't make any sense but wanted to know from you. so pls explain.

I have already taken him to psychiatrists & psychologists. They just gave the same options like dont think about smoking, dont meet friends who smoke, dont visit the places where you usually smoke, keep yourself busy, do exercise, yoga, spend more time with family etc. He has already tried those even before meeting the psychiatrists. Pls suggest some medicines along with the instructions about what he should do & what not.... so that he can try this sincerely.

Brief Answer:
One cigarette shortens his life by 15 minutes

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for reverting back to me.

I am glad to know that you are aware about the dangerous effect of smoking and in my view 5-6 cigarettes are not harmless. Every smoked cigarette reduces his life by 10-20 minutes and in addition it lowers the quality of life specially when you have ill health.

I understand he visited psychiatrist but I feel from the available description he is still have lack of motivation because he does not perceive them harmful (because somebody said they are not harmful and many other explanations).

I like to inform you that without his motivation no power can assist him to quit smoking. I must acknowledge that bupropion can reduce craving for smoking but likely to help only when he have enough motivation.

I hope this helps you further.

Brief Answer:
It is prescription drug and should not be taken without medical supervision

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX
Thanks for follow up.

Bupropion is noradrenaline dopamine reuptake inhibitor which increases the concentration of noradrenaline and dopamine at the receptor level and helps in reducing craving for smoking.

It is taken orally and no other form of dosing is available.

The dose, duration and frequency of intake varies from patient to patient and willingness and severity of condition. Most of my patients need 150-450 mg of bupopion for a period of three months to recover completely from smoking.

Alike other medications it has side effects and should not be taken without medical supervision. In other words unsupervised use can lead to more adverse consequences than any benefit.

I hope this assists you further.
Thanks and regards.
