Question: I had a serious side effect to Colyte the prep for a colonoscopy, I'm trying to find the BP medication I take that may have caused the serious reaction. I take Losartan 100 mg, Carvedilol 6.25 X 2 and Hydralazine 25 mg X 3 daily. I also take Atorvastatin 10 mg and Terazosin10 mg at bedtime. I began taking the Colyte at 6:00 pm as directed and I blacked out around 7:30-8:00 pm and I remember very little about that night?

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

I understand your concern and would explain that your symptoms could be related to an hydro-electrolytic imbalance, which could be induced by Colyte intake.

You should know that it can cause dehydration and electrolyte imbalances by their loss with the stool.

There is no interaction between Colyte and the other drugs that you are taking, but considering that it can lead to loss of fluids, coupled with antihypertensive drugs, a more prominent decrease in blood pressure may occur.

From the other hand Colyte can induce even cardiac arrhythmia, related to electrolyte imbalances.

So, I recommend going to the ER and performing a resting ECG, a complete blood count and blood electrolytes, to be sure that everything is OK.

Meanwhile, I would advise taking plenty of fluids in order to stay well hydrated.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
