Posted on Thu, 10 Nov 2016
Question: I had a medical abortion in July under a gynaecologist followed by 8-10 days of bleeding in which first 3-4 days were of heavy bleeding. I did a urine pregnancy test after 14th, 18th & 30th day which were all negative.
All symptoms of pregnancy viz. cramps, nausea, breast tenderness was also gone immediately on the next day after I took the second abortion pill.

After all this I have had completely regular periods in the past three months. The only problem is that I have gained some weight around belly. Should I be worried that the abortion failed?

Brief Answer:
You are not pregnant for sure. Start with lifestyle changes.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Dr Purushottam Neurgaonkar here. I welcome you to HCM VIRTUAL CLINIC. I have gone through your question, and I think I have understood your concern. I will suggest you the best possible treatment options.

1 ) First of all do not panic.

2 ) As per your history, you have 3 regular cycles after your medical abortion. Also, your pregnancy test at 30 days was negative, with this you can certainly assume that you are not pregnant.
Your process of medical abortion was perfect and complete.

3 ) Now, about the weight gain around your belly. In medical terms it is called as central obesity.
I will suggest you to opt for a healthy diet and regular exercise regimen. Include more portions of fruits , salads and vegetables in daily diet. Drink plenty of wwater in the day. Avoid deep fried foods, bakery products and refined sugars. Avoid substance abuse if any.
This kind of central obesity needs urgent and serious attention. Otherwise it might interfere with your hormonal system and can affect menstrual cycle and ovarian function.

Please do start with the lifestyle changes as discussed,at the earliest.

I hope this answer helps you. Please write your opinion about the helpfulness of this answer. I will highly appreciate it.
Thanks .

OK. Thanks a lot for your assurance.

It is just that I did some internet research and found that in some cases even during pregnancy the urine pregnancy test will come negative and also regular periods will be present upto even 7th month. Although before abortion I had missed my period completely and my UPT was also positive everytime (I tested 5 times).

But I guess the occurrence of both these two things together during pregnancy should be extremely rare and given the fact that negative UPT and regular periods these things occurred after abortion only so it should be 100% safe to assume that I am not pregnant. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hi there,
Thanks for appreciating the answer.

You are right in your guess.
You can safely assume that you are not pregnant.

I will suggest you to get USG done . This will be the test to see that uterus is actually and physically empty and non pregnant.

I hope this answer helps you.
Thanks.
