Question: I got the induced normal delivery one day after the due date which was on 27th July 2016. The breasts started producing milk on the 5th day and there was no problem in latching of child (nipples are not flat or inverted). There after milk supply did not increase at all. Right breast producing 2 to 3 ml of milk and left producing 1 to 2 ml every day. The OB/GYN prescribed lactare powder and there after promolact. She also suggested home remedies like cumin gaggery and senugreek powder. But nothing worked out. Due to episiotomy, 5 days antibiotic course was prescribed because of which stomach upset took place. To treat that upset currently I am taking
1) tab pantop 40mg
2) tab satrogyl 400mg
3) tab meftal spasm
4) tab sporlac
as 5 day course.
1)What shall I do to increase the milk in breast ?
There is no lactation expert in my area.
2) What should I feed my child ?

Brief Answer:
Drink more water

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns.

This is common problem faced by first time mothers.

Milk is generally sufficient. You need to feed once every 2 hours so that the milk is produced in breast and you can feed it.

Even at night keep feeding once in 2 hours. If baby cries feed immediately.

Meanwhile drink more water, milk, buttermilk etc. to keep yourself hydrated.

Stop mental spas immediately. Take Panton only if you have burning sensation in stomach.

Dear Doc,

I have been drinking around 2-3 L of water from the day of my delivery, that is 28th of July, 2016. Also I am having 3 cups ( 300mL each) of milk everyday. I have been trying hard to feed my child via breasts but since a drop or two of milk is only produced, the child gets frustrated. After which I have to feed him with cow’s milk. I have been trying hard to BF him before every cow milk feed but in vain. Since milk is rarely produced, he is hungry.

What should I do? How do I increase my breast milk which is almost NIL? I exclusively want to breast feed my child. Please help me start properly the breast milk flow.

Should I start formula milk? Which one? In case, I only formula feed him, will he have a very low immune system? Will he have a lower IQ?

My kid’s delivery was vacuum supported normal delivery. His APGAR score after 1 min and 5 min were 3 and 7 respectively. Is his first APGAR score worrisome?

You asked me to stop Meftal spasm immediately. Before taking these prescribed medicines, I had to go to washroom after every meal (small/big) but now the bowel movements are okay. Will stopping the medication in between will not resort my bowel movements to previous situation? Should I continue with Tablet Satrogyl and sporlac for remaining dose?

Thanks and Regards,

Brief Answer:
Stop medicines

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You can stop sporalac and satrogyl also if you have taken them for a week. Sometimes these medicines if taken for a long duration could reduce breast milk.

This won't affect bowel movements. Your bowel movements are likely to have been frequent as you had difficult delivery.

APGAR was low as it was vacuum delivery. Baby might try to learn sucking breast slowly. But I don't think there could be long term problems as baby has recovered.

You can feed formula milk which are available in market. There are specific brands for children less than 3 months. This will not cause problems like low immunity or low IQ.

Let me know if you need anymore help.

Hi Doc,

I have started with Lactogen Stage 1 formula milk, and also Nan Pro 1. Just looking for which one suits my kid more.

Are there medicines that can help me start with lactation? I mean everyday few drops of breast milk I am able to feed my kid. Are there medicines that can help me enhance?

Until when shall I try to enhance my breast milk? It has been 16 days since delivery.

Does eating ripe papaya help in milk enhancement?

Also how do I reduce and tone up my stomach muscles? When can I start exercising?
