Posted on Mon, 12 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,
I'm 26 years old. I've been using corex cough syrup from 3 years. I take 3 bottles per day. i used to be a extrovert earlier, but now turned into a complete loner i don't feel like mingling with people.
I've finally took the decision to quick and i am not taking corex from 10 days (today is 11th). Suffered a lot during first like chills, cold sweat, unable to sleep, frequent yawning etc. The withdrawl symptoms are slowly reducing but i feel like getting it out of my body completely and immediately. Is there any thing i can do which will help me detox faster. I'm thinking of doing yoga from tomorrow. Please help me.

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HEALTH CARE MAGIC

You are a 26 years old and were using COREX (Chlorpheniramine and Codeine phosphate) since last 3 years. Now you have stopped to take Corex since last 10 days. The symptoms of withdrawal like chills, cold sweats, insomnia, yawning etc are there. First of all I would like to tell you that you have passed acute phase of withdrawal and now in 11th day you will have mild withdrawal only.

You have passed acute phase and drug got excreted from body. You will suffer mld withdrawal symptoms because the drug cause dependence because of changes at receptor levels.

To decrease the symptoms like chills, insomnia, yawning drugs as Clonidine can prove useful. The drug will reduce the symptoms of autonomic withdrawal and will help to keep you relaxed. The drug will also prevent relapse and will maintain motivation. For pain symptoms you can take analgesics like Acetaminophen, Diclofenac. Consult a psychiatrist for prescription of these drugs.

Yes yoga will help to reduce anxiety and keep motivation alive. I would also advise you to exercise daily at least for one hours. This will result in release of endorphins and will reduce the symptoms of anxiety.

In case of severe chills and sweats try Progressive Muscle Relaxation Exercises, Breathing Exercises. These non-medicinal treatments will reduce anxiety.

This is a good thing that you have stopped COREX with your own. Try to keep your motivation alive. Try to avoid the places where you used to take drug because of learning behaviour individuals tend to develop craving at places where they used to take drugs. The craving result in relapse. Talk to your friends or family members when ever you feel like taking the drug. It is possible that even after 2-3 months you may develop craving but you have to keep motivation alive to prevent this long term protracted withdrawal. Listen good music, keep the lights of your room a little dim. Avoid caffeinated drinks and drink plenty of water. This will help in quick recovery.

Thanks, hope this helps. Ask again if you have more doubts.

Should i consult a doctor before using Clonidine?
I came across SANR technique [Super accelerated neuron regulation] while browsing in one of the sites. Is this legitimate? Is is scientific?

Brief Answer:
SANR has not much scientific proof supported by studies

Detailed Answer:
Hello again, thanks for asking a follow up question

Yes you have to consult a doctor before using Clonidine. The drug is not a drug of abuse and will not make you dependent, but this is a prescription drug.

SANR (Accelerated Neuro Regulation) is relatively a new technique with tall claims but I am afraid the results are not as good as it is publicised. There are not much research studies available that support the claims. It is not possible to wash opioid from receptors in some hours. As far as I know this technique is not much useful and is not 100% useful as there are claims.

Thanks, as you are in maintenance phase so now it will be easier than acute phase.
