Suggest Ways To Deal With Rapid Heartbeats

Question: I have had bouts of rapid heartbeat off and on for years. I was just diagnosed with afib. Three times this week my heart rate has shot up to about 160 and at the same time my tongue got very tingly. I took my pulse and my rythem was normal so I don't believe I was in afib. What would cause a rapid heartbeat and tingly tongue. The episodes this week are the only times that my tongue has gotten numb/tingly.

Brief Answer:
Complete thyroid profile with ECG is mandate.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Mam,

I understand your query and concern.

Its extremely important that you get evaluated thoroughly for this rapid heart beat along with tingling sensation of the tongue.

A normal rhythm virtually rules out the possibility of atrial fibrillation.

Its important to rule out hyperfunctioning thyroid, as it can present with such symptoms.

I suggest you get a complete thyroid profile along with baseline ECG and 2 dimensional echo.

This triad of investigations can accurately help to find out the cause and well as have lay a precise guideline for the treatment aspect.

Post your further queries, if any.
Thank you.
