Suggest Ways To Deal With Anxiety After A Heart Attack
Question: My 90 year old mother who is a great health food/supplement supporter and has up 'til now been on no medications, recently had a heart attack. And despite all the naturopathic and homeopathic remedies she has been on continues to experience ACUTE anxiety - unable to sleep, eat, obsessive thoughts, etc. I feel that at this time she needs some kind of SHORT TERM anti-anxiety medication in order to get some rest and respite from her horrible mental state - something to help stop this unrelenting anguish she is experiencing. I know she is elderly, but isn't there something we can do for her? None of the natural remedies she is taking seem to be alleviating her unrelenting panic - and I fear this is doing more damage to her than her heart condition (the doctors are telling her that the remaining undamaged heart is quite strong.) What do you suggest I do for her?

Benzodiazepines will be helpful for anxiety and insomnia
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:
1. Insomnia with anxiety in the present scenario requires treatment.
2. I would usually prescribe lorazepam 0.5 mg at night. It should help in anxiety and sleep.
3. Also meditation, relaxation techniques, mild walking, and counseling could be helpful.
For medication, you will require prescription from your doctor.
Hope it helps.
