Suggest Treatment To Lower The Inflammation Of The Pancreas

default
Posted on Wed, 2 Apr 2014
Question: I've been hospitalized for mild pancreatitis, lipase level was 1098 now 480. I had upper right abdominal pain which has subsided. Cat scan and ultra sound showed nothing remarkable for kidneys, gall bladder, stomach, liver or pancreas. Been on banana bag and diet elevated to solids. I'm 52 and have a history of alcohol use. I'm on synthroid, uloric and clonazepam. Is there a supplement I can take to lower the lipase levels or use digestive enzymes or pancreatic enzymes or would that worsen the problem because they contain lipase? Is there something I can take to lower the inflammation of the pancreas? Been here five days and they are keeping me overnight again!?

Brief Answer: Detailed below. Detailed Answer: Hello! Thank you for the query. Unfortunately there is no medicine which will accelerate healing process. Acute pancreatitis is a self limiting condition which usually subsides after 3-7 days. The main rule in treatment is to avoid any foods or fluids taken orally so the pancreas can get regenerated. During the therapy, fluids should be given intravenous, foods are usually given through the tube inserted to the small intestine. Pancreas enzymes can be taken in case of chronic pancreatitis where the pancreas is destroyed and does not secrete digestive enzymes. In acute pancreatitis, this enzymes should not be taken. That is all what can be done. Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions. Regards.

What about herbs such as curcumin or milk thistle for inflammation?

Brief Answer: . Detailed Answer: This is not a good idea. Please note that apart from Octreotide (which effect is questionable) most of tested medicines (includind NSAID, H2 blockers, steroids) were completely ineffective in acute pancreatitis. Its because the inflammation is not a reason of the disease, its an effect of enzymes activation leading to digestion of pancreas and surrounding tissues. Herbs usually stimulate bile and pancreas fluids secretion. So instead of help, it may worsen the inflammation. Regards.
