Brief Answer:
Treatment of Xerosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome back to healthcaremagic

I am Dr. Kakkar. I have gone through your query.

People who are atopic/allergic have an inherited low water retentive capacity of the skin, which leads to increased trans epidermal water loss (TEWL) into the atmosphere, specially when the weather is dry and cold in winters. The skin therefore feels dry and scaly (Xerosis).

A condition known as Icthyosis Vulgaris also presents as Xerosis. Icthyosis vulgaris is due to defective fillagrin gene/mutations thereby leading to a defective epidermal barrier and reduced water retentive capacity. Icthyosis vulgaris is also associated with atopy.

Soaps dry the skin further, and thus exacerbates the condition further.

Therefore in atopics, it is advisable to apply a good moisturiser as frequently as possible

Moisturisers specially those which contain urea and ammonium lactate are hygroscopic (trap moisture from the atmosphere and lock it into the skin) and therefore are beneficial in xerotic skin conditions.
