Suggest Treatment For Weight Gain And Hair Fall After Thyroid Removal

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Mar 2015
Question: I had 3/4 of my thyroid removed a year ago. Since then everything about me has changed. At first I was on 200 mg Levo but I was so tired I could not get out of bed I started gaining weight and my hair started falling out. I switched to 1 grain of Armour thyroid and it seems to make me ultra sensitive to the slightest stress, I either become mean, or so anxious and paranoid I want to run or cry. I have an incredible lack of focus now, I have gained 30 ponds, my hair is still falling out I get cold .... it goes on and on. I look like a different person, I swell up, my hands feet, and face. I have read a lot about thyroid meds, dos don'ts, lab tests, dosage, but although my job is IT my new inability to focus seems to have dumbed me down I guess. I do not know what to do. The one thing that is clear is that no matter what a regular TSH lab may say, normal range is not normal if I feel abnormal! Please help, my quality of life, my marriage and my career are falling apart.

Brief Answer:
To Consider another reason apart from thyroid

Detailed Answer:
Good day,
Noted your concern. Very sorry to hear about your symptoms. To be XXXXXXX i dont know how much of your symptoms are really due to thyroid. I suspect there could be another reason behind your symptoms other than thyroid. It could be a hormonal condition ( Cushing's syndrome) or even due to depression.

You must discuss with your endocrinologist about your symptoms and if feasible get a hormone test done for cushing's syndrome. by the way, do you consider yourself depressed at all ?

Appreciate a reply ( and i would be answering again after around 7 hours as it is quite late in the night here)

Regards
Binu

No. I truly do not believe it is depression!! I have a wonderful life. Truly blessed. Its not depression although my symptoms are depressing. Lol. Endos just want to give t4 and tell you you are in range and disregard how i feel. If i take a mega dose 50,000 units of vit d2 along with armour it seems to subdue the anxiety and shakeness i get from armour but i m so fearfull of taking the armour because when i do i have a short temper cant focus and i get angry. I m not normally an angry person. Iit only happens when i have taken the armour for a few days. I have never gone past 2 weeks of taking it every day because of getting angry or overly emotional. When i stop taking it i m no longer angry but my original tired bloated listles symptoms are back. Did u look at the pictures i sent. The are 1 year apart. When i take the armour even for a week some of the thickness in my face goes away. Is there something i can take with armour or another nd thyroid i can try? I m very pleased it was you that responded to my ?. I read one of your replys and saw that you seem to understand t3 opposed to T4 . Everything i have read says to increase t3 after 2 weeks by 30 mg (1/2 grain) until you reach an optimal dosage to aliviate symptoms. I tried it once when i first started and it was disasterous. People thought i was on drugs and my memory of what happened what i did and said was foggy and took several days for me to recall. It scared me and i have been afraid of armour ever since. I take it a few days but then i start feeling fatigue in my arms.... I assume it is related to adrinalyn...(sorry no spell ck here) so i stop. Is it just a stage i need to press through? Should i take t4 or t3 and t4? I m

Brief Answer:
T3/T4 combinations

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for the reply . I did see the pictures and noted the difference i appearance of face.

Armour thyroid is an animal thyroid extract and it contains both T4 and T3. It is dificult to titrate the dose of it and it can cause immunologic reactions .Hence, most doctors in modern medicine including endocrinologists discourage any animal based preperations.

Synthroid /levothyroxine is a pure T4 preperation and body has to convert it to T3 for physiological actions including weight balance. Current thinking is that atleast few patients have " inability to convert T4 to T3 ". Hence, there is an argument favouring combination of T3 ( Cytomel) and levothyroxine (T4). But none of the endocrine organizations favour treating with Cytomel in any of the existing guidelines and hence endocrinologists do not favour this combination. Few doctors other than endocrinologists combine both.

You could discuss with your doctor about a trial of combination of Cytomel and Levothyroxine for a period of 3 months. But as i discussed earlier, you must also discuss with your doctor about an alternate cause like "Cushins syndrome".
