Question: Hello Doctor,

My daughter is 2 yrs 10 months old, weighing around 13.3kgs. 4 days back she passed watery stools thrice and in the evening complained of stomache ache. The pediatric prescribed colpep in case of sever pain which I gave only once, and also prescribed tummysoft for 5days. Since then she is fine, active and feeding as usual but she is still passing watery stool (sometimes foul smelling) with some white matter (looking like rice particles), once a day. No other complains. Anything to worry?

P.S. : She has been suffering from cold and cough for the past few weeks and has been on antiallergics and cough syrups. No antibiotics though. Can this be the cause of watery stool?

Brief Answer:
No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Most often children suffer from viral infections which make them pass loose watery stools. The cause does not need to be treated and is self limiting. But the lost water and salts need to be replenished. ORS (oral rehydration solution) is the mainstay of treatment and needs to be given. If the child is otherwise active and playful you need not worry.

Also give curd or yogurt since it contains plenty of beneficial bacteria and should help. Give zinc supplements like Zinconia Syr 5 ml once daily for the next 10 days. You need not worry. It should gradually return back to normal.

Regards
