Suggest Treatment For Vomiting And Fever In A Child

Posted on Mon, 11 Jan 2016
Question: Hi. So I have two daughters. My two year old got sick and vomited on 12/12 at night. Then her sister (age 5) and her both get sick on 12/13. Both vomit one time in the middle of the night. The oldest had a fever of 101.5 before she vomited. I clean the house Lysol and Clorox everything. Wash all the bedding. Then 12/17 my 5 year old gets sick again this time vomitting 5 times in the night. Once again bottom to top clean the whole house. Now she just got sick again on 12/20. No complaints of stomach pain, maybe slightly loose stool, no fever. She has just been sleepy. Should I take her to the doctor? Is it normal for this to be coming back? I have cleaned every surface in my house she has been away from people since 12/17 except for immediate family. I don't understand why this keeps coming back?

Brief Answer:
Do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concerns but don't worry. The symptoms can be due to viral illness or parasitic infestations. Also, sometimes food allergies can present in this way.

I would recommend you to give de worming treatment to both of them (Albendazole 400 mg single dose on day 1 and 14). Most viral gastric infections are self limiting and improve gradually over a few days with good hydration and regular nutrition. You may give Domperidone for vomiting episodes and acetaminophen for fever episodes. Try to find if any new food ingredient was introduced during this period as it might have lead to food allergy. If yes, then omit that in future.

In case the activity, appetite and symptoms do not improve in next 2 days, then do visit a pediatrician for proper clinical examination and definitive treatment accordingly.

Hopefully it will be of help. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.

Take care
