Question: My 2 years old woke up with a 101 fever, cold hands and feet, he is drinking milk and some liquid, he is also Breathing faster than normal when asleep, refusing solids. He has no other symptoms and already took him to check for an ear infection, which was negative. Any ideas of what's happening? He did spent the day in the sun and we just got a heat wave here. Thanks

Brief Answer: Possibly due to Viral fever Detailed Answer: Hi Welcome to Healthcare-Magic Greetings of the day Dear Ms Its likely that baby is having viral fever. The cold feet and hands is due to peripheral vasocostriction followed by rise in temperature. Rise in temperature is usually associated with faster breathing rate. In the absence of other respiratory symptoms like cough , cold, running nose there seems to be no cause for concern. Its quite usual for appetite of babies to decrease during fever and they do not prefer solid foods. I would advise the following 1. Syrup Paracetamol 10 mg per kg of body weight per dose thrice a day 2. Continue giving him liquids especially hot chicken / tomato soup. 3. Avoid cold juices. Do not worry he should be doing fine soon. Do get back to me if you need any further assistance, will be glad to assist you. Wishing you and your family happy and healthy life.
