Suggest Treatment For Viral Diarrhea

Posted on Tue, 25 Nov 2014
Question: About 4 pm this afternoon XXXXXXX began getting very ill, vomiting about every 20 minutes. He can not keep even a drop of fluids down. His temperature is 95.2. I tested my thermometer to make sure it was testing accurately. Should I take him in, or be concerned? Well I am concerned but the low temp worries me as well.

Brief Answer:
Prodrome of viral diarrhea

Detailed Answer:
Hi...right now what he is having looks like a starting event (Prodrome) of viral diarrhoea. Unless the kid's having low urine output or very dull or excessively sleepy or blood in motion or green bilious vomiting...you need not worry.

But, yes, you are right, the lower temperature are a bit of concern. I suggest you take him to the nearest emergency room and get his checked is he is in shock. After they tell, he is safe, no need to worry.

If diarrhoea starts - I suggest you use zinc supplements (Z&D drops 1ml once daily for 14 days) & ORS (Each small packet mixed in 200ml of potable water and keep giving sip by sip) as hydration is very important and crucial part of treatment. If there is vomiting you can use Syrup Ondansetron (as prescribed by your paediatrician).

He has not had any diarrhea. He has been sleeping in between every vomiting episode. His vomit is green bile vomit for about two hours now. He has urinated only once very little and we had to carry him in and hold him up. Are these the symptoms you are saying I need to seek medical attention?

Brief Answer:
Emergency room immediately

Detailed Answer:
Hi....green bilious vomiting and low urine output is really worrisome. Please take him to emergency room right now.... Please do not waste time. It can be a surgical emergency as there is bilious vomiting.

I also request you to keep me updated and posted about his well being later. I wish him speedy recovery.

He was moderately dehydrated and vomiting still every 20 minutes at the ER. After evaluation they determined he had the flu but, severe. They gave him Zofran tablet to stop the vomiting. After 45 minutes they gave him ice chips to see if he could hold the down, after 30 minutes with no vomiting they let us bring him home. He is sleeping and is taking fluids 1 tsp at a time every 30 minutes with success. Thank you.
Honestly I would have rather the ER hydrate him as he is very, very thirsty and has muscle cramps and everything but, they insisted they did not want to put him through that (IV) and felt he would be better by morning. They also did not do any blood work, found it unnecessary as he had all the signs of the flu. I do hope it is all that they expect and he is well by morning. Thank you for your advice!
