Suggest Treatment For Vertebral Compression Fracture

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Dec 2014
Question: Hi! My 86 year old mom is suffering yet another vertebral compression fracture (L1 and L3 have been affected). She broke her left hip last November and had a partisl hip replacement. She is still using a walker. She has no other problems except a grade 4 cystocele. She takes no medications. When she had her other fractures in 2006 and 2008, her doctor and an orthopedic surgeon said there's no treatment other than rest and time. Her doctors said she was not a good candidate for kyphoplasty or vertebroplasty. Is there any new treatment or have the mentioned treatments improved for ladies her age in the last few years? Any recommendations? Any information is appreciated! Thank you,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Newer modalities include interspinous prosthesis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

I have studied your case.
I have sympathy for your mothers chronic spine pain.

Newer modalities include interspinous prosthesis which are minimally invasive and affective if there is cord compression.

Calcitonin nasal spray will help in body building.
Stem cell therapy may help to increase vertebrae strength.
Injection Teriparatide will also increase vertebral strength.
You may need to do MRI spine with contrast again to see for nerve compression or discitis.

Physiotherapy like ultrasound and TENS therapy will help
I will advise to check your vit B12 and vit D3 level.

Thank you Dr. Gandhi! I will go over these options with her tomorrow. Her mind is sharp as a tack thankfully!

I don't believe she has cord compression. Her D3 level was checked in the summer and it was ok.

I think she would be agreeable to the ultrasound therapy. We live in a XXXXXXX Tx and have access to good medical facilities.

Thank you again for your prompt and thorough response!
