Question: My doc says I have vaginal atrophy and wants me to start with a hormone pill in the female area. I am so scared to take estrogen because my husband mom had cancer due to estrogen..I helped take care of her. Is there anything over the counter that I can take without the side effects..I feel like I have a urinary tract infection with pressure near the ureatha..she says it is due to atrophy. Can I try vitamin e..maca powder..rep lens coconut oil??..anything work besides hormones..?? I am stressing over this way too much..will increasing my sexual activity improve this condition?? Can I have a yeast infection..would that cause the pressure feeling in my uretha. Thanks so much!!!

Brief Answer:
It is reasonable to try Vagifem.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare Magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.
As rightly told by your doctor burning and pressure sensation near urethra can all be caused by vaginal atrophy. On examination she must have seen atrophic vaginal musosa. That is the reaon she has told you so.
If you still feel that it is due to urinary tract infection, get a urine culture sensitivity test done.
I don't think you have yeast infection. Yeast infection causes discharge and itching which you do not have.
It is good to remain sexually active. But it is not going to reduce the pressure like symtom that you have.
Just one relative with breast cancer is not a significant history. Don't worry about it.
Vagifem contains a very small dose of estrogen. Since it will be used locally its systemic effects are minimal. I dont think you should worry so much. You can just use it for 2 weeks and see whether your symptoms improve. Then you can reduce the dose to just once weekly or totally stop it.
If you still do not wish to use vegifem, use Replens or Vagisil faminine moistriser and see whether it relieves the pressure like symptom near urethra. Eat Soy proteins daily like Tofu, soy milk etc. They are a good source of estrogens.
I hope this helps. If you have other concerns, i will be happy to answer.
