Suggest Treatment For Urine Retention After Taking Imipramine For Functional Dyspepsia

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: My GI prescribed imipramine for functional dyspepsia. It worked but it also caused urine retention, severe enough that I had to have an indwelling suprapubic catheter installed. Later I started taking the new Japanese drug Acotiamide for the fd. The imipramine was therefore dc'd. However the urine retention persists to a significant degree. Can anything be done about this?

Brief Answer:
Prostatic enlargement to be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I really appreciate your concern for the urinary symptoms. It is unfortunate that you had severe retention of the urine while taking Imipramine prescribed for functional dyspepsia. Retention of urine is one of the most common side effect produced by Imipramine. However, this side effect should have subsided following the discontinuance of Imipramine. Since it hasn't I will suggest we rule out prostatic enlargement. Discuss with your treating surgeon. He/she may order for an ultrasound scan to check for prostate measurements.

Hope this answers your query.
