Question: I have had 5 Inguinal hernia operations 4 on my right side. The first at age 20. last 4 with mesh over a 50 year period. The last operation being 10 years ago and was on my left . I now have a umbilical hernia . I was told when I had the hernia on my left side that one of the factor, which caused my hernia, was the large amount [size of ] mesh need on my right side. Like a balloon pressed against a wall , it would pop out to the weakest point. I have had a large amount of mesh on both sides now for 10 years. I haven't lifted more than 20 pounds or try not too, because of the pain[ sourest]. Question: Is all these operations a major factor in having now a umbilical hernia and was the 4 previous operation on my right side a major factor to my left hernia?

I have chronic prostitis does all of these hernia operation play a roll in this condition? I had some prostitis I my 40's but after having the operation on my left side it became chronic

Brief Answer:
As explained below.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history well and understood your concerns.
To answer your specific questions:
It is not known much to have correlation between having or operated inguinal hernias causing umbilical hernia.
Yes, the factors like laxity of the abdominal wall, muscles and faciae not having sufficient strength and other factors like chronic constipation, chronic coughing, prostatitis and any such factors that increase intra-abdominal pressure can cause hernia at any site.
Operation on one side of hernia can not be a cause for hernia on the other side: the original factors as discussed above being the causative factors.
Chronic prostatitis as mentioned above can be a contributory factor.
I hope this answers your query,
