Question: I noticed I have a small umbilical hernia size approx . 1/2 in in dia. and protrudes approx 1/4 inch . does not cause pain unless I press directly on it at times. My Dad ,Mom and two brothers all have or had them. a couple GP Dr's told me just leave it alone. my concern is that it will just continue to enlarge. at my age 69 and having ITP what is your opinion as to considering surgery.? Brief Answer:
Can safely observe. Surgery if it enlarges

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX It is a common problem. As you said many people in your family have had it. Usually it does not lead to any complications but sometimes it can get obstructed specially if its large in size. Yours is fairly small. So I would advice to wait and observe. However, if you want you can get surgery done its a small operation with not many problems. You can discuss with your GP and he would be able to arrange it for you. Take care.
