Question: I make my own yoghurt , kefir, with a yoghurt plant, I make it with low fat milk. Marvellous for fruit smoothies or in fruit salads. I have just been checked by Lifeline and they tell me I am heading towards type 2 diabetes. I am 76 years old , about a stone overweight , very active in garden. I am wondering if the kefir in my diet is damaging and helping me put on weight ? My father had type 2 diabetes.

Brief Answer:
Not Kefir

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

Kefir is a product made by fermenting milk. And People use kefir for poor digestion, upset stomach, lactose intolerance, diarrhea following treatment with antibiotics, and high cholesterol.

Now the doctor used heading towards type 2 means you are at a borderline and that is called impaired glucose tolerance.

Trust me Kefir is an innocuous fermenting product and has nothing to do with diabetes. Thoughts its consecutive XXXXXXX is forbidden for more than 6 months in a row.

You have a familial history of diabetes that makes you more vulnerable. Old age and slight overweight issue are all making the insulin resistance a bit an issue which i am sure slight diet and lifestyle modifications like losing weight, exercise and increase food with low glycemic index and absorb slowly to be used.

Seeka dietitian and let them help you in this regard. You are still not a diabetic. Slight precautions will get you through.

Take care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please. May the odds be ever in your favour.

Brief Answer:
prolong use is forbidden

Detailed Answer:

I mean one should not use it for more than 6 months. Its not advised for some adverse effects with prolonged use but diabetes is not one of them.

I hope it explained.

Sorry to bother you again. I have been using it for a year now, always had trouble with constipation but now so much better! Is it dangerous to continue using it ?

Brief Answer:
stop using kefir and start

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
You shouldn't use kefir for more than 6 months so you should stop it now. For constipation, adequate hydration, start taking enough of fiber in your food, exercise daily and if needed Psylium or methylcellulose bulk can be used instead of kefir. Hope it helps.
