Suggest Treatment For Thickening Of Endometrial Lining
Question: Hi, I have been recently diagnosed with an endometrium of 16.5 mm through MRI scan. Uterus is normal, junction normal, ovary normal. However, I have a thick endometrium as per my doctor. Now my period has started, but it is very light. Is it possible to have a light period even when the endometrium is so thick?

Thanks for contacting health care magic.
In your case , it is normal to have a thickened endometrium at the end of the cycle in the secretory phase of menstruation.
I would have been concerned more if your periods had not started and if this finding would have been midcycle or for that matter if you would have been a post menopausal woman.
But considering the normal size uterus and no other abnormality seen on the scan and just thickened secretory endometrium is a normal finding in your case.
The bleeding pattern is such that it is light on the first day usually and the flow increases by second or third day. So it is likely that your bleeding would increase in next few days.
Also it would be of assistance to correlate even better if you mention the date of scan and your LMP.

Dear Doctor, thank you for the reply. The first day of my last period was on 17 Oct. I actually started spotting on 5 Nov and that took me to the doctor. On transvaginal US it appeared as 16mm endometrium with cystic areas. Then MRI was conducted on 10 Nov. Results are: uterus 7.1 * 4.1*4.5 cm Normal in size and signal intensity. Thickened endometrium 16.5 mm. No obvious focal lesion. Junctional zone 3.5 mm Normal. No adnexal lesion bilaterally. No obvious pelvic lymphadenopathy. My period started on 12 Nov. Today is the second day but already finishing. It is a light period. Considering that I have a thick endometrium I was expecting to bleed heavily. Pl advice.

With LMP 17th oct , you had spotting on the 18th day and now again at day 26th day today. If the spotting stopped after 5th till 13th nov , then it was a breakthrough bleed which is seen in estrogen excess and progesterone deficiency.
If your menses don't resume flow by tomorrow or day after the progesterone deficiency is the likely cause.
Otherwise at 16mm endometrial thickness , it would still be considered normal if there is no irregularity in the cycle and bleeding resumes normally.
Also maintain a menstrual calendar for next 3 months and plot the pattern of menses / spotting / days of flow.
If the same pattern continues then further hormonal profile would need to be asked for.

Dear Doctor, thank you for the reply. I started spotting on 5 Nov and continued till 11 Nov. Then my period started on 12 Nov and today is my second day. As suggested, I will maintain a record of the next 2-3 cycles.
