Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Xerosis

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: I am having itchy skin, much more than usual. My home heating system is constant running because of single digit temps outside, so the house is very dry, but this doesn't appear to cause the itch. I had my yearly MRI in late January because I have two small lesions in my pancreas. All was ok, including my liver And kidneys, which if diseased could cause itchy skin. I also had my yearly skin exam two weeks ago and all is good. So what is causing the itch?

Brief Answer:
I suggest a possibility of Xerosis

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I have taken note of your query and i have understood it.

I suggest a most likely possibility of Xerosis.

With increasing age human skin loses its water retentive capacity and thus may itch, specially in dry, cold weather in winters further exacerbated by room heating.

Itchng may be further exacerbated by wearing body warmers/ woollens directly on skin.

I suggest you to use an intensive moisturizer cream/ lotion, at least twice daily.

Avoid soaps. Soaps are too drying.
You may use a gentle cleanser e.g cetaphil cleansing lotion.

Avoid woollens directly on skin.
Instead wear cotton clothes on skin and woollens over them.
This would prevent woollens coming in direct contact with skin.

An OTC oral antihistamine e.g cetrizine 10mg once daily will provide you symptomatic relief from itching.

Regards
