Question: My son is 4.5yrs old and weight 24 kg. He had gone for a school outing yesterday and it was very hot while the place he has been to there was very high ac and after that again he came back in hot weather in bus and again went home in ac taxi. After he came back since evening he has been lazy and started having fever of 100 to 101 every 4 to 5 hrs. We have been giving 8ml meftal and 8 ml Crocin alternately every 4 to 5 hrs. Today also same pattern is continuing. Fever comes every 5 hrs. He is active once fever comes down between the 2 episodes. Pl suggest if this is viral fever. Any other line of treatment we should follow. He doesn't have any cold, cough or pain.how long does it take to subside.

Brief Answer:
Looks like viral fever - please do not use Meftal

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.

Fever of few days without any localizing signs could as well a viral illness.

Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day.

If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics or any other treatment at all.

Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active.

Paracetamol can be given in the dose of 15mg/kg/dose (maximum ceiling dose of 500mg) every 4-6th hourly that too only if fever is more than 100F. I suggest not using combination medicines for fever, especially with Paracetamol.

Meftal contains Mefenamic acid which is a NSAID. It carries the risk of gastritis and renal problems in the long run. Please do not use Meftal.
