Suggest Treatment For Symptoms Of Hyperthyroidism

Question: I recently moved from a single-family home to an independent living apartment in a continuing care retirement community. I have had a problem adjusting to the temperature-controlled environment here. I have two thermostats in my apartment, which I have to keep in the mid-60's in order for my body to not overheat. My body temperature stays right around 97.6, but at the slightest body exertion, I feel tremendously warm, even hot, all over. On occasion, I'll even perspire profusely. Even though the temperature may be in the very cold ranges outside, I find I have to wear a thin jacket instead of a heavy jacket or coat. While I am dressing in short-sleeved tops, other residents are wearing swatshirts, sweaters, and other winter-type warm clothing. I can't even sit close to someone without overheating. This affects my sleep at night, also - my pillow gets too hot, and I keep waking up to adjust the covers - either throwing them off, or putting them back over me again. This "condition" actually started before I moved, but I thought it might be a temporary thing. Could it possibly be associated with certain medications, or going "cold turkey" from a medication? I just discovered this evening that, for some unknown reason, I have not had a new or refilled Rx for Sertraline for some time. I intend to rectify that situation first thing tomorrow morning by informing my PCP's office. In the meantime, could you shed any light on my body's overheating anomaly? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Please, get evaluated for hyperthyroidism!

Detailed Answer:
HI and thanks so much for this query.

I have reviewed your information fully. This is suggestive of hyperthyroidism. This is a condition in which excess thyroid hormones are secreted which causes excessive stimulation of the whole body function. It manifests with intolerance to heat, increased heart rate, sweating, diarrhea, weight loss, etc. To investigate this, you need to have your TSH levels evaluated through a blood test. I strongly recommend you do so.

The results would be guiding and allow us to further understand your plight and develop a helpful to redress it.
