Question: I could not sleep prone without something moving up my esophagus? and causing a racking cough. Had to sleep in a partial sitting position; neck back on couch, feet out. Constant nasal drip. Belching air more than usual. Sometimes wheezing. XXXX YYYY@YYYY

Hello,

Your symptoms are digestive of GERD ( Gastro esophageal reflex disease). GERD is due to the stomach acid realizing up the esophagus.

Confirmation of diagnosis is by esophageal pH monitoring.Treatment of GERD include
-Omeprazole 20 mg or any other proton pump inhibitor daily
-Avoid spicy, fatty ,fried food
-Avoid medications like aspirin,ibuprof ibuprofen that upset stomach in case you need these medications always take them with food only
- Leave at least two hours between dinner and bedtime. never go to bed on a full stomach
- sleep with the head end of the bed propped up with wooden blocks under the bed post
- avoid smoking and alcohol

Since you are 81 years old and complaining of wheezing and difficulty to lie down and joint position , I recommend that an ECG also to be done to rule out any cardiac problems

Please be advised to follow up with the primary care provider for necessary evaluation and further management
