Suggest treatment for swollen tonsils and sore throat

Posted on Wed, 9 Aug 2017 in Ear, Nose and Throat Problems
Question: I have had one swollen tonsil for about two months, No pain or sore throat. I've had bloods taken (full blood count and thyroid) which came back all normal.

I have gallstones and suffer from acid reflux but other than that, all healthy.

What can this be as I'm getting really worried.

Brief Answer:
more investigation is required

Detailed Answer:

Unilateral tonsil swelling requires investigation to exclude some serious disorders like Hodgkin's disease or other malignancies. Although such a diagnosis is unequivocally very important, it's not the most common cause (thankfully). Benign disorders are more common, so please don't worry.

Perhaps your doctor may consider checking the cervical lymph nodes (if it's not already been done). An ultrasound scan can be a good initial test (no radiation and useful information for the blood supply, shape and structure of the nodes). If enlarged nodes are revealed then further investigation with CT scan of the neck and perhaps also the abdomen can be considered.

If your tonsil has been stable for the last two months then the likelihood of malignancy would be quite low.

I hope you find my comments helpful! Let me know if I can assist you further.
Kind Regards!

I don't have any enlarged lymph nodes. The doctor did feel all around my neck.

Brief Answer:
without nodes the likelihood of malignancy is low

Detailed Answer:
So if there are no nodes it's probably a benign condition. In such cases follow-up visits to your doctor is required to check how it goes.

Kind regards!
