Posted on Fri, 10 Oct 2014
Question: I've had a swollen ankle. Sometimes there is some pain, some time none. I don't recall twisting or a sprain. I was on a cruise to Alaska did a lot of walking, and one day I took my shoe off,and it was very swollen very painful for a day or two, that was almost two weeks ago. I see no brusing, but some times it's stiff, and a little painful. I'm a female 46 years old, work in retail,so five times a wek I stand for 8 hours.
Thank you.

Hello,XXXX
Thanks for using HCM.
I am Dr Rakesh Sharma answering your query.
The causes for swollen ankle if it is only one sided then it has to be some local injury, sprain,or infection.
You have given the right first aid by putting ice on it and resting the ankle.
If it is only one sided keep on doing that, put your ankles up, that is keep raised , wrap around an elastic bandage as well.
You can take mild analgesic anti inflammatory and also apply local anti inflammatory gel.
If it is local injury it should heal in 2 to 3 days time.
If your condition does not improve, an X RAY has to be done to rule out any other pathology.
Do let me know If your swelling is on both sides, then few more tests are to be done, to set a provisional diagnosis.
Hope you find these suggestion useful,If any more queries, please go ahead.
Best wishes.
