Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Stiffness Of Scar After A Car Accident

default
Posted on Fri, 23 Jan 2015
Question: My husband was in a car accident 3 months ago. A car going 50mph hit him on his driver's side while he was sitting at a stop sign. He was okay accept he had a bit of glass in a wound on his head. They did a CT scan, found the glass, and put one staple in. The doctor said she thought she got it all out but only time would tell. The wound healed up fine. Last night my husband noticed the area slightly above the scar to be a lil puffy. I inspected it and noticed there was a centralized location that was stiffer to the touch than the outer edges. And when I touched it, it only hurt when I put quite a bit of pressure on the stiff area. I'm suppose to go out of town today for a week and am nervous about leaving because I know my husband won't go to the doctor unless I make him.

Brief Answer:
This seems to be caused by a glass indeed, but no need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

It’s very common for a car accident glass to be left in a wound. It is almost impossible to remove all parts of a glass from such wound. That is why; it is highly possible that the symptoms he has right now are caused by a glass left in the tissues. Puffy and painful scar indicates the location of the glass. It is also very characteristic for a glass to give pain when pushing on it.

He should visit a general surgeon. However this is not an urgent condition. In some cases such glass can get evacuated by itself. The pus accumulation can push it out from the wound.

So please do not be nervous, there is no reason to be nervous. If he does not want to see a doctor, nothing wrong won’t happen, He may wait a week with it. Actually he was having it there for 3 months now.

In conclusion:
- He should visit general surgeon and have the scar incised and glass removed
- But if he won’t do that: nothing wrong won’t happen
- The glass may come out by itself
- It can also wait a week or so

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards
