Hello XXXXXXX

If it is truly strep throat, you would be getting much better within 24 hours of starting the antibiotic.

While it is tempting to try to self diagnose from appearance, it is not always possible. When I get symptoms of a very painful throat and fever, even I don't try to diagnose by appearance - I go in to an urgent care clinic to have my throat swabbed as it is the only way to know whether it is or is not.

There are other infections that can look like strep. Strep throat give a fever, usually a high fever, and very tender swollen neck glands.

White pus on the back of the throat or tonsils can sometimes be from post nasal drainage from an upper respiratory infection which is usually caused by a virus. A viral infection will not respond to any antibiotic.

Can you go in to an urgent care where you are? Anyone, a nurse, etc, can do a simple throat swab. They can run a "rapid strep" test while you are there. If it is negative, most likely you have a viral infection, but the swab can be sent for a definitive culture.

It's also possible for bacteria to develop resistance to an antibiotic and so the Ceftin may not be effective even if it is strep.

I hope this information helps and you are feeling better soon. Please let me know if I can provide further information.
