Question: Hello, i live in XXXXXXX and last week I had severe stomach pain and diarrhoea. I went straight to the hospital and was diagnosed with gastro enteritis. I had to do a blood test and also and ultrasound. Finally they said I had a mild pelvic collection. I went to see a gynaecologist and they said I had a mild infection. What worries me the most is the blood test result which was taken the day I went to hospital. lymphocyte 10.5 / neutrophil 83.3. Can you pls give me your advise? Thank you / XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Don't worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear and thanks for your query.

Don't worry because blood test tell only that your neutrophils/lymphocytes are increased and they justify infection that you have .

Accumulation of fluid in pelvis often causes symptoms such as pain inside lower left or right side of abdomen.
In your cases the fluid accumulation could be due from mild infection of tubes causing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease(PID) which has been leaked into the pelvic region.
Hence you should do a vaginal swab to determine the cause of infection and to exclude STI like chlamydia or gonorrhea.

And depending on the results of vaginal swab you should be treated with a course of antibiotics.
After treatment of infection ,white blood cells will decrease .

Dear Dr Mbiarra,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I've been to a gynaecologist. She also told me that there is no need to worry. I am under medication right now. But I just want to make sure that the fact that my lymphocytes have decreased is not be worried about since the "average" should be 20-50% and ine is 10.5%.

Sorry to insist, but I really need to be reassured.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Be calm.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear again .

Thank you from being part of HCM.

If you are under treatment there is nothing to worry about.

Low count of lymphocytes or lymphocytopenia is frequent during bacterial infection.

Lymphocytopenia that is caused by infections tends to resolve once the infection has cleared.

All the best
