Suggest Treatment For Stage-4 Renal Leiomyosarcoma

Question: Hi, my 84 year old mother has been diagnosed with leiomyosarcoma Stage IV with a few spots on her liver. She has a large mass in the kidney area. They are unable to surgically remove the mass, too dangerous. And they don't want to do radiation as the mass is close to a blood vessel. Is there any other treatment that may work for her? Are there any treatments or treatment clinics that we may be able to try?

Brief Answer:
It is a difficult scenario

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

As it has spread to the liver, there is no role of surgery. Radiation can be given, but only to relieve pain. There is an option of chemotherapy to control it, albeit temporarily. Whether she is fit for that can only be assessed by her treating oncologist.

If she is not fit for chemo, another option is pazopanib tablets. This has less side effects but again, fitness has to be assessed. If none of these are feasible, then only palliative care and symptom relief.

You can definitely take another opinion, if possible from Mayo, Johns XXXXXXX Memorial XXXXXXX Kettering or M D XXXXXXX

Hope this helps.
Regards
