Question: hi my daughter is 4years now. she started squinting once she was one year.when we went for a check up we learnt that she had short sight and we put her on glasses.her eye power was rapidly increasing every 6months and now she has got a power of -8 and -9 in her left and right eyes respectively. we did a squint correction when she was 3yrs and 6months. her squint is however corrected fully..we are now concerned with the rapidly increasing eye power. is there any solution if not..how are we supposed to help her to keep her comfortable

Brief Answer:
Contact lenses will provide the best possible solution

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through the problem mentioned. The eye power of children often vary. This is because of two reasons. The first reason is the growth of the globe of the eyes. As the size increases, the light no longer gets focussed on the retina (inner side of the globe) and therefore the eye power changes. The second reason is the change in curvature of the cornea or the transparent portion of the eye in the front, which is also responsible for the change in eye power.

The change is corneal power can be taken care of by the use of contact lenses. Most often the progression of high minus power (myopia) can be arrested with the use of contact lenses. Please do not worry as such lenses are most often tolerated well in spite of the tender age of such children like yours.

About the size of the eye ball, you would have to be patient and spare some time for the growth to stabilise. LASIK or laser induced keratectomy can be done to modify the shape of the eyeball, but I would not recommend it at this age.

In summary, I would recommend the use of contact lenses for your child. Rather than using high power spectacles, contact lenses can be much more comfortable for your child. You would have to talk to your ophthalmologist about which type of lenses are preferrable but semisoft gas permeable lenses are the ones to be preferred as the tear film in between the cornea and the lens helps in correcting the eye power. Alongside, I would suggest regular follow up with your ophthalmologist.

Hope that helps.
