Question: My son had contact with either fire corral while scuba diving. It has been 1 week and it is only getting worse (spreading on arms and legs) We have cleaned it, used alcohol....and think its time for prednisone. What dose is recommended with frequency and tapering?

Brief Answer:
Start with 20 mg daily for 1 week and then taper by 5-10 mg every 5-7 days.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for being at healthcaremagic
If I was his treating doctor I would recommend him to start with prednisolone 20 mg daily in the morning after breakfast for 7 days and then taper it by 5-10 mg every 5-7 days depending on his response till a dose of 5 mg daily is reached and then prednisolone can be stopped.
Steroids are prescription drugs and you need to see the doctor in person to get them.
Besides this I would recommend him antihistaminic like tablet Chlorpheniramine 4 mg twice daily till the time the itching and the rash persists.
Besides this don't use alcohol on the affected areas as it will further irritate the skin.
I hope to have answered your query and would be happy to clarify any further doubts.

So I took my son to the doctors and they diagnosed him with scabies. He did the 1st wash, but is still covered from head to toe.His eyes are swollen. He is on a prescribed antihistamine, but should I talk to her about Prednisone? I don't mean to push prednisone, but when I have skin reactions, its all that causes relief...

Brief Answer:
In case of scabies prednisolone is not recommended

Detailed Answer:
If the doctors are sure about the diagnosis of scabies then permethrin is the most effective drug.
In scabies prednisolone will only prolong the infection and won't let it cure. So there is no need to give him prednisolone.

In scabies the itchy rash and papules usually takes 3-4 weeks to cure even after the effective treatment is started. So continue the antihistaminic till the rash and itching subsides.
