Suggest treatment for spreading hives in the lower legs

Question: I have what looks like hives, starting with my lower legs and moving up my body. I have taken a zyrtec 7 hours ago and a Claritin 2 hours ago. The itch is very strong and I wonder if I can also take a benedryl, which puts me to sleep as well as minimizing the itch. My MD said only to take the zyrtec, about two weeks ago but the symptoms tonight are really bad.
