Suggest Treatment For Sprained Knee

Question: I have had a fall in the mountains end of July and twisted my right knee. Knee seemed alright at first and I continued riding my bike, carrying luggage as we were travelling. After 24 hours knee swelling occurred very rapidly and from that point I was not capable to walk or bend my knee. The diagnosis of an orthopaedic doctor in Germany was 'knee effusion'. The knee was drained and the fluid clear. The following weeks I rested my knee, iced it. Back in England the GP recommended physiotherapy which I have done. Still doing the excercises. Went on a work trip before Christmas. Did more walking than usually, carried luggage and since then the knee seems to be tense again. Seems that I have gone backwards. Just wondering whether I should insist for an MRI to be done. I have never had knee problems before the accident. The Doctor in Germany talked about some ostoarthritis. Knee has only been x-rayed so far. I am 53 years old and used to be fit and healthy. I can sort of manage, but am wondering whether I should consult a doctor, maybe privately as the knee is after six months still not what it was before.

When will I get an answer. I have never used this service before. Will I get the answer by e-mail?

Brief Answer:
Consult Orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation & specific management.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, XXXX,
Welcome to Health care magic . A number of expert doctors are available on the site & answers to queries are provided promptly by them.
I have read your query in detail & understand your concern.
The knee problem that started with an accident.. followed by fluid collection in the joint.. efficiently treated with fluid drainage/ rest cold packs, recurred after 5 months of accident after physical stress , restricting daily activities -definitely needs further investigations to evaluate the exact cause of the problem & it's treatment.
The fluid collection in the joint was a body reaction to the fall. It can be due to strong jerk/ trauma to the joint & recurrence may indicate
- need of more rest to the part & stress to the non healed joint,
- it's also possible that the fall has caused some more severe injury to the joint parts ( Injury to ligaments( meniscus)/ bursae / tendons ) - which need to be managed .
X ray reveals bone structure of joint .. & to evaluate complete joint injury a detailed study with investigations like MRI would be helpful... So this followed by specific treatment of the cause along with rest/ physiotherapy & medicines as per expert advise..would complete the treatment & give you full relief.
I would therefore advise for consultation of an Orthopedic surgeon ( & specific knee surgeon as per his advise )for specific management.
Hope.. the answer is informative & useful for you. Any more information you need, please feel free to ask.
Thanks.
