Question: missed a step and fell down 2 hours ago (age 53, female, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure (taking medicine for both (prescribed by primary doctor)) ). hurt right ankle in the fall. slightly swollen, mostly on right side of ankle. I can bend my ankle up and down and left and right with slight discomfort. can now (was really limping after I fell) put some weight on with some discomfort in ankle area mostly on right side of ankle and slightly less discomfort around achles heal and calf. hurts to bend ankle when walking. I try to walk without bending ankle. was working at my desk for awhile, and looked at foot, it was discolored - somewhat purple - until I lifted leg and moved toes and foot around, then turned back to normal color (color looks like uninjured left foot). is this just a sprain or something more serious? The discoloration worried me. Can I wait till morning to see if it looks/feels better?

Brief Answer:
It is likely to be sprained ankle

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query

I'm Dr Sudhir Kumar

After going through your query, I concluded that you probably sprained your right ankle. Most likely you sprained lateral collateral ligament as it is slightly swollen on right side of ankle. Foot discolouration may be due to hematoma and it will gradually resolve. As you kept foot dependent during working, so swelling increased. Don't keep it dependent as far as possible. Keep it elevated on pillow during sleep and resting period. Active toe movements are beneficial. Analgesic such as ibuprofen are used for pain relief . Rest and icing is helpful in reducing swelling. Vitamin B and C are helpful in recovery.

However it seems to me a sprain but x ray can be done to exclude fracture. You can talk to your doctor about it. There is no harm in waiting for one day.

Hope your query get answered. If you have any clarification then I will be happy to help.

Wishing you a good health.

Take care.
